Growly tums in Japan

Possibly one of the things that made me the saddest about my trip to Tokyo this year was that I didn’t get to eat as much of their food as I’d imagined I would! (The saddest thing is probably having to go to a hospital instead of Disneyland.) Japanese food is one of my favourite cuisines, and it being my first trip to Tokyo, I really was beyond excited about trying the food there.

Wandering around their food halls was so much fun! I spent most of them squealing OMG OMG SO PRETTY OMG LOOK AT THAT PINKIE LOOOOOKKKKKK OMG I WANT TO EAT THIS OMG. :x

During the days when I was stuck in the apartment because I was unable to go out, K headed out to get meals for me. I mostly only wanted soupy foods. The first time he went out to try and pack some dinner back for us, he came back in shock. Many of the stores didn’t do takeaways, and the ones that did had a very small and specific menu for food that they would pack for you. They comprised mostly of fried foods which were sides, or fried rice. He’d checked with quite a few places but they all didn’t do takeaways for ramen or any soup. I think this was because they just didn’t offer foods that wouldn’t taste good when taken away back home! Talk about standards.

I ended up eating a fair bit of instant cup noodles, not that I minded that much because the ones in Japan taste awesome! It got a bit sickening though, to keep eating instant food when all I wanted was to head out to eat. There were a couple of days when I was well enough to be out and about – so thankful for those days and everything we got to try!

For dinner one of the days, we bought back a selection of foods from a supermarket food hall. So yummy! I love it when my meals have small portions of a lot of things because of the variety. I tend to get bored with my food, which a really terrible thing I know. That night, we had sashimi, sushi, gyozas, sandwiches, croquettes and potato salad heeheehee.

Pastries there always looked so inviting and colourful! We got one of those lil things in the egg shells, because well I just had to. It was a pudding-like dessert, which very sadly looked better than it tasted :P

They also tend to be rather generous with portions in the supermarkets when they are handing out samples of food for you to try! We tasted a super super yummy mango pudding which I wish we could have brought back, but boy were they heavy. And expensive!

Spotted the famous square watermelons in Japan! Hahaha, so cute. I didn’t take note of how much they cost though! It’s such a crazy novelty.. I think I’d much rather pay for one of their expensive rock / honey melons than a square watermelon :P

On one of our days there when I was feeling better, we headed out to hunt down an oyakodon place that some tweeps told me about. Their pictures looked amazing so I really wanted to try it! When we arrived for lunch, they were closed for a split shift so we headed off to shop around for a bit before going back for dinner.

Check out the pictures – they use three eggs per serving! We were seated at the bar so we got to watch them prepare our meal.

Mmmmmmm… Each bowl cost over $20, and sadly both K and I felt disappointed with it. It lacked flavour and wasn’t particularly tasty. The eggs were very well prepared though. Perhaps it’s a case of taste being subjective because it really does look awesome, but boo.. I felt so bad for dragging K all the way there!

I don’t have pictures for this, but on our last day there, we splurged on a sushi dinner at a restaurant in the Isetan building. It was so good, and I’m glad we at least had that one proper meal after the entire trip of instant dinners! There were some strange sushi in our sets that I didn’t want to eat though.. Think it was some plant or flower. Bright indigo food just doesn’t look appetising to me, heh heh.

Before going to Japan, I had always dreamed about going nuts trying the different snacks available there because the ones that I have tried here, I love them all. Because of my bad cough, I couldn’t eat so much of them so I did the only logical thing to do – I bought A LOT of snacks to bring back home! Hahahahaha. We kinda went crazy every time we stepped into a convenience store – we just grabbed packets of what looked good or interesting. Hehehe.

I’m still eating my way through the stash I have at home and I’m running out! I’ve liked all of them so far and I can’t wait to go back and buy moooorrrreeeee!
Especially the Calbee sticks, OH MAN ALL THE FLAVOURS ARE SO YUM. Also, visiting a Calbee+ store where they fry your chips fresh is on my must-visit list for our future trip back.

Do you have any favourite food places in Tokyo / Osaka / Kyoto? Or any snacks that are a must try? Please let me know because I really would love to try as many of them as I can! :D
